ELLE New Talent Awards 2010

ELLE Magazine South Africa hosted their annual ELLE New Talent Awards on Wednesday night, 29th September. This year they partnered with retailer Mr. Price to host a fashion competition featuring nine young designers. The theme for 2010 was "Optimism", and each designer's task was to create a collection that's fun, optimistic, edgy and original.

The event was hosted in Johannesburg Arts On Main, as South Africa Fashion Week SS 2011 continues. Cape-Town based designer Cleo Drommer, a 22-year old designer was the unanimous winner according to the panel of judges. His designs mixed futuristic touches to give them an edgier, strong look whilst being soft and fun through light, pastel colours. His choice of fabrics played with different textures, including PVC, leather, silk, and satin.

Cleo's prize included:
R25 000 cheque to help launch his career,
Close business and retail skills mentorship with Mr. Price
R5 000 from Mr. Price towards production costs
A ready-to-wear line inspired by the winning collection will be sold at Mr. Price

CAPE TOWN FASHION WEEK 2011 | STONED CHERRIE

Favorite Collection Overall : STONED CHERRIE

Sorely missed at the ARISE Africa Fashion Week in June earlier this year, STONED CHERRIE brought colour and femininity and history with an urban spin during Cape Town Fashion Week SS 2011. Khensani Nkosi, designer, has proven yet again that she is an industry staple, and with good reason. Her designs strike that delicate balance of wearability and high fashion chic. With her characteristic bold colours and fine tailorship, her clothes embody that ferocity and pride and at the same time down-to-earth quality of strong African women, past present and coming.

The accessories were also in a class of their own. Like perfume, a woman's accessories are simply an extension of her personality. They can be flamboyant in color, eccentric to show individuality, or subtle  and chic. Feather head pieces, dangling beaded earrings, chunky cloth bangles, a killer dashiki bag reminiscent of the wildly popular satchel it bag - think Burberry Prorsum or Alexander Wang studded - made the collection even more thrilling. One tone black or blue heels kept the look simple.

Nkhensani Nkosi has also shown keen business acumen, not just by creating clothes that a lot of women identify with, but also by partnering with a retailer to make her brand more accessible and known by women. The Love Movement with established retailer FOSCHINI is a line "...inspired by global icons and peace lovers the world over" and features inspirational t-shirts, clothes similar to the ones from CTFW 2010, and the iconic Drum pictures that made SC a "local is lekker" brand, all at affordable prices. The Love Movement is sold alongside international brands such as M.A.C, GUESS, Sissy Boy amongst others.

One wonders, whats next for Stoned Cherrie, a lingerie line or better, a perfume that captures that contagious South African spirit?
